The Art of Observing

My art takes time, and as a mom, time is precious these days. Creating space for art when time is squeezed by kids has made me more intentional with my time than ever. I hope by sharing my art and my vision, I can inspire others to take these same steps for themselves.

Observing as Meditation

In motherhood, making space for my own creative spark has been deeply rewarding. Even when I don’t feel inspired, if I begin to paint, I am always glad I did. Recreating what I see in watercolor form has a meditative quality to it. I used to set timers on my phone and meditate, but this is much better. My mind enters the flow state quickly when I paint, and is filled with nothing but color, brush strokes, and light.

The guilt that comes in motherhood can be piercing. It’s easy for me to fall into the martyrdom trap, thinking that if I just sacrifice every scrap of my being for everyone else, then the world will finally be in balance. But I have found a deeper balance than I have ever known from pursuing my passion. I am eternally blessed with neighbors and friends and grandparents and (now) preschool, so that I can be free of my most precious children and do something for me.

If you are a mom and you have a creative passion, I urge you to pursue it. Creating fulfils quicker than coffee, quicker than an impulse buy online, quicker than a handful of chocolate chips. And the fulfillment you gain from it is so complete. After I’ve spent an hour painting, I feel that all is well in my soul.

Selling and marketing my art has been a new piece of this puzzle for me to try, and I am trying! It’s so incredible to feel the support coming at me from all angles of my life. If you’ve purchased a piece or support my art in any way, thank you. Your support gets me one step closer to my dream - to make art my full-time gig! I am so grateful to be creating. Thank you for stopping by.
